Transport Secretary, Grant Shapps has admitted there is no guarantee that British staycations will be allowed this summer.
The latest travel news for the UK comes from the Transport Secretary, Grant Shapps, who has admitted that staycations within the UK may not be permitted this summer and that travel corridors (which allow quarantine-free international trips) are too risky to introduce.
Shapps told Sky News this morning: “I can’t give you a definitive answer on whether we will be able to take holidays, either at home or abroad.
“Nobody can tell from the point at which we are sitting right now.”
When asked if travel corridors may offer an exit strategy from current Covid-19 restrictions, Shapps said: “The entire travel corridor policy was on the basis that place you were travelling to had to have lower levels of coronavirus.
“What we are dealing with now are new variants, and we cannot risk it.”
Yesterday, Health Secretary Matt Hancock laid out stricter legislation for arrivals into England which included £10,000 fines for those attempting to evade quarantine, and prison sentences of up to 10 years for those attempting to conceal their arrival from a red list country. They are due to come into force on February 15.
