Taking the whole breakfast experience outside

Taking the whole breakfast experience outside

As the weather gets warmer and the summer approaches, it’s hard not to start thinking about those summer days spent outside in the garden.  Breakfast al fresco always feels like a luxury; something associated with 5 star hotels and sunny climes.  But, as more people extend traditional living into their outside space and become experts in the art of barbecuing, eating outside is becoming the norm for the summer months.

And now this is being taken up a notch, with cutting-edge designer outside kitchens available, which, for luxury bed and breakfasts, are the ideal way to add that wow factor to your accommodation.    An outdoor kitchen looks stunning, is a great talking point, and is also a practical solution to staying cool while cooking, or eating, the full English breakfast on a hot day.

The WWOO kitchens are designed by the Dutch designer Piet-Jan van den Kommer, and are almost completely maintenance free.  This ‘must-have’ concept has been available to buy in the Netherlands for 10 years, and is now popular across Europe and parts of the US, but this year is available for the first time in the UK.

Simon Hawkins, garden designer and the UK distributor of WWOO, says: “An outside kitchen is much more than just a barbecue area.  The new versions are very stylish, very contemporary.  They look great, and are fantastic for offering guests that beautiful but functional space outside in the warmer months: to eat, read, relax.”

Kitchens such as WWOO are already transforming the outdoor cooking and eating experience across Europe, as they combine durability with contemporary aesthetics.

Simon says: “Outdoor kitchens have to be hardwearing and able to withstand constant use, outside temperatures and weather conditions all year round, but these ones still retain their designer visual appeal, meaning that they enhance the outside space as well.”

The WWOO kitchens are fully equipped beautiful outside rooms, built in anthracite and grey concrete, and can come complete with a pizza oven, a Big Green Egg BBQ, an integrated steel fireplace, a ceramic butler sink or stainless steel sink, robust wooden storage crates, olive-wood cutting boards, and a canopy to cover two segments and barstools.

“It is best to find an outdoor kitchen that is made from raw materials such as concrete, wood and steel and also one that can be bought in components, so they can be built in a small or large space,” says Simon.

“A luxury B&B might have a small courtyard garden, a roof terrace or a huge outside space, so an option that is modular is best.”

Simon also suggests finding a kitchen that can be built in a day, as the WWOO kitchens can, so there is minimal disruption to the business.

The WWOO kitchens have already got an expert fan in Theo Michaels, Masterchef 2014 semi-finalist, private chef and author.

He says: “The WWOO concept is fantastic and long overdue. Being Greek Cypriot cooking outside is in our blood and these kitchens are not only stylish but they also make all-year-round outside dining a real possibility.”
